Prewitt—On the 29th of May, 1873, Jimmy Prewitt died of congestion, aged 11 years and 7 months.
He bore his sufferings with great fortitude for a child of his years. On Monday He was taken sick and on Thursday he called his ma to his bedside and said, “Ma, I want you to kiss me.” After he had kissed his ma, he called his sister, Noel, who kissed him, and then he wanted the rest of the children to come in and kiss him. Then he said, “don’t forget to tell my brothers to kiss me when they come home from the farm.” After this he seemed to be recovering. On Thursday, the day before he died, he wanted to be carried to the porch. He looked around him and he wanted to go to bed. He told his ma to put his suit of clothes away for he would never need them any more, for pa would get him a new suit. He went to sleep and slept a short time. When he awoke he complained of having a pain in his side. From this time on, he commenced getting worse. He begged his ma not to leave him, and a short time before he died he looked into his mother’s face, almost crying and said “ma, if I don’t get well, I have one comfort. I will not be alone, for I will be with grandpa and my uncles.” He quietly passed away about a quarter past 1 o’clock. -s
